Russell McClellan - The Angel I Prayed For

I had been divorced only a year when I first met Russell. He was the most adorable, caring person I had ever met. He was a breath of fresh air.

Almost nine years my junior, he had no problem with the age difference and was very old-fashioned. He opened doors, held my hand, and always paid for the meals. He was so different from any of the other men I knew. He was courtesy, respectful and gracious. He genuinely cared for me and listened to what I had to say. The fact that I was a little overweight did not stop his adoration or his affection.

The fact that he also loved both of my children never went unnoticed. He was willing to do whatever it took to bond with them. And so began the four-year courtship - the ups and downs of living together. A new member in the house. Someone else getting mom’s attention.

Of course, it wouldn’t be love without the pitfalls. We did separate a time or two, but never for more than a month or so. Then, came the most powerful moment of my life. I got saved. I invited Christ into my life, and I wanted Russell to experience the same wonderful feelings I felt. Only he wasn’t convinced.

After much prayer, I ended up having to make a final separation from Russell that would either end our relationship or make it stronger. I had to make sure that I was doing the Lord’s will, and not mine. I moved out.

Russell and I both became stronger during that time. Russell did eventually give his life to the Lord, after which he asked me to marry him. Of course, I said, “Yes!”

Russell gave me hope where none existed. He was the angel I had prayed for, and he continues to be my support and my anchor. He is a wonderful husband and stepfather. And, two years and ten extra pounds later, he still thinks I’m beautiful.
