Rose Marie Quintanilla - The Gift I am most grateful for
Every year I realize I become more and more grateful for the time I spent with my mother, the laughter we shared, and the beautiful memories I have.
During my childhood I recognized and discovered that my mother definitely had her share of troubles and often times I felt she had more than her share while trying desperately to raise her children. I don’t know if my other (younger) siblings could say the same but my mother has always been there for me when I needed her most. Through the years, she became as much my friend as my mother.
During my childhood, we didn’t spend very much time together but when we did, it was always a comforting feeling to get to know her better with each laughter and memory we shared.
Growing up I didn’t realize how much her presence or absence would affect my present life. Now that we are miles apart, I appreciate her presence so much more than I ever did before. So much so that there is not a day that goes by, I do not think of her. Even now, years later the memories of all the laughter and times we shared still bring laughter to my heart and tears to my eyes.
With each passing day, I learn more and more that parents really do make a lasting impression in their children’s lives and no parent should ever take their duties lightly because their teachings will last far beyond one lifetime. I know I didn’t have the best childhood but I know that God handpicked my mother so that I could travel my journey with all the tools I will need in this life. This is my life, and my mother along with every blessing I ever had and have in my life will become my tool and I intend to use it well.
I guess you could say that I always knew in my heart no matter how old I get she would always be my #1 mommy. She will always be to me both the best “imperfect” and “perfect” gift I ever received in my life. I am eternally grateful for my mother. And I thank GOD for blessing me with her and for allowing her to still be with us even if we have to be miles apart and a phone call away. Because the phone calls help to remind me that no matter how far in life I travel - home will always be waiting for me.
