Anna Small - Inspiring The Confidence To Go Back To School

Growing up poor, I lacked a lot of self-confidence.  Soon after graduating from high school, I was married with children.  I didn’t work, but stayed at home with my children and enjoyed every moment.  However, when they began school, I felt there was something missing.

My friend, Anna, at the age of thirty, had just started college and encouraged me to go.  I, of course, didn’t think I could do it and made excuses every time she’d mention it.  Soon, Anna was tired of excuses and picked me up one day for lunch.  To lunch we did not go, however, as Anna had made an appointment for me to see a counselor at the college.  She had paid for my first class and already purchased the books I’d need.  Anna had pushed and I was enrolled. 

With college classes came the discovery that I was not stupid, as my now ex-husband called me all of the time.  I realized that I was quite smart and could do the work.  Anna gave me the gift of self-confidence and the courage to move on with my life to become what I’ve always wanted to be-a writer.  Without Anna’s help, I could not be where I am today.
