Animal Control’s Secret Heroine..
Well… Some people we can not reveal when they do something good, cause it is not always following the law.. but bending it.. and I would not want to put this persons carrier into jeapoardy..
A few nights ago I found a young pitbull, she had been severly neglected or a stray for a long time..
She was very dirty, full with fleas, had big scabs on her neck after either bitemarks or something else and just skin and bones.. We took her in and gave her a bath and took her to the vet for frontline medication. Then it showed up that she also has a blatterinfection so we got antibiotics for that.
We decided to keep her unless someone claimed her instead of turning her into the shelter. Im a dogtrainer and used to pitbulls they are one of my favourite breeds.
Later when we were out walking we past a house where the guys called after me and the dogs (already had a big dog in the house) I ignored them and walked on and they did not dare to approach the whole way. I know I wondered if that was her previous home, my little pit actually avoided them. Same thing the day after, she avoided the house despite noone was out. When coming back from the walk a bit away from my house I meet a young woman that asked me about the dog. She warned me to go further up the street cause the dogs owner lived there…
I decided then that I was gonna make sure I got to keep her the legal way and I was not gonna give up without a fight.. I called the animal control, it was a saturday, noone there.. so I decided to call the police to see what the law said, if I was required to return her despite abuse/neglect. THe very sweet officer told me that so was the case or I could be arrested for theft.. HOWEVER he also encouraged me to keep her hidden from the owners sight and call animal control again on monday.. He made me smile..
I thanked him and hung up.. BUT I remember have heard an emergency number on the animal controls phone so I called in an emergency and it didnt take her long to come to my door.
First she told me that she was gonna have to take the dog to the shelter and if the owner hadnt claimed her in 5 days I could come down there and adopt her. This made me really upset, I didnt want my pup go to the shelter.. I had her in my arms and was about to cry… The woman also told me that I had helped the guy by cleaning her, feeding her and making her look better than she was.. *sighs* So my heart really fell…
Then my pup nussled up to me and the woman said: Oh god I can’t do this to you guys, she loves you… and she told me what to do..
she gave me a number and told me what to say and what the law was so I didn’t have to loose her. She also told me that the owner would have to show proof of rabies and so on (wich I’m sure he can’t) to be able to get her back. She helped me to get to keep my pup… Today is the last day..
If I don’t hear anything today.. she will be mine til the day she goes gray and fall asleep forever....
I can’t write the animal control woman’s name, nor where I live..
But she is a true hero… If all people were like her this would be a beautifull world!
