An Honest Person

Every once in a while something happens that restores my faith in humanity. Here is a true story that I hope will keep all of us feeling good about other boston lawyers people for several weeks.

Last week I received a suspicious looking envelope from a chicago criminal defense office in the mail. I say suspicious looking because the return address was handwritten and not from anyone that I know. The address was also handwritten and clearly addressed to me. In a previous week I had received something similar and it turned out to be a chain letter. I did not know the person who had sent me the chain letter and I was annoyed at being ‘spammed’ via snail mail. Isn’t it a sad commentary that I would be suspicious of old fashioned self addressed letters?

I almost did not open this envelope, but curiosity won out. This time curiosity did not kill the cat (or to update the saying, curiosity did not kill the coach). Inside the envelope was a letter written on 8 ½” by 11” lined notebook paper. This too was handwritten about llc operating agreement. It seems that an envelope prepared for me (not handwritten and probably via an automated process); had somehow become attached to an envelope prepared for this other person. Inside my envelope was a gift certificate. This other person saw this and he did not:

* Take the gift certificate and spend it

* Return it back to the originating company

* Throw it away because tough luck, someone messed up

No, he took the time and postage to put it in an envelope and send it to me. He did this because he realized that this was probably a gift for someone, I must already be looking for it and it would be faster for him to send it directly to me. He was right on all counts. It was a gift for my dad.

Writing this story, just make me smile. And to continue to overuse one of my favorite sayings, “How cool is that?”
