A Group Of Friends I Never Knew

About five years ago, I was going to university.  I had two young children and a husband and I had recently quit working in order to pay more attention to my school work.  I had student loans to contribute to the family income, but I sure missed those tips from my waitressing job!

Then my husband lost his job.  We knew he was going to get employment insurance but we didn’t know how long that would take.  My student loan money usually ran out fast as we used that for tuition, books, clothing, and bigger things.  We quickly ran through our cupboard stock and I was desperate.  I knew I was going to have to get a job - just something to get us by - but I didn’t know how fast that would come either.

Then, one day after a tough day of classes and studying, there was a knock on the door.  It was registered mail.  My heart immediately began to pound because in my experience that was usually bad news, not good.  I was glad to find out I was wrong this time!

I signed for the mail and opened the envelope.  Inside were a bunch of $20 coupons for Superstore.  I quickly counted them up and found that there was $300 worth!  The letter that came with it was typed.  It said that it was from some people in the community who knew how hard I was working to get my degree and raise a family at the same time.  They had heard about my husband losing his job and wanted to help us out and ease some of my burden.  It was signed simply, “Your Friends.”

I never found out who it was from.  Of course, I had suspicions but no one would ever admit to it.  True friends don’t need the gratification of your thanks - they just want to help when they can.
